Tampa Deep Sea Xplorers (TDSX) is committed to advancing state-of-the-art deep sea exploration and discovery. Their affordable deep-sea vehicles enhance scientific data collection in the ocean down to 4,000 meters. TDSX was formed in July 2016 for the purpose of competing in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE. TDSX created the first generation of their Barracuda autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE, which netted them second place in the competition’s NOAA Bonus Challenge. Now in its fourth generation, the portable Barracuda AUV easily descends to 500 meters for the quick collection of quality subsea data at a low cost. At only 16 kg, the Barracuda AUV can easily be launched by hand from a small vessel or shoreline while also being strong enough to withstand high pressures encountered at depth. Compared to existing commercially available systems, the Barracuda AUV is capable of collecting several times more data per day of operation than has been available from small, low-powered AUVs.
