In celebration of Mother’s Day, we’ve been reflecting on how our mission and purpose impacts the lives of those closest to us as well as our home, Mother Earth. XPRIZE’s initiatives are designed to care for and preserve Earth’s resources, as well as create solutions for an abundant future on our shared home.
This Mother’s Day, despite the challenges facing humanity, you can still share optimistic news that work is being done to discover and unlock new potential in the world, while also creating a sustainable and equitable future for all. Here are a few of the initiatives we have in the works:
PRESERVING THE ULTIMATE MOTHER OF LIFE
Our rainforests are home to the planet’s largest collection of plants, animals, and insects. There are countless more species that have yet to even be documented. These precious lands are under threat, so we recently launched the Rainforest XPRIZE to encourage the development of new scientific discoveries, technological innovations, and sustainable bio economies, which can empower local communities.
FRESH AIR EVERY DAY
Everyone loves a sunny day with clear skies, and because all of humanity has massively decreased our impact on the environment due to social distancing requirements, the air seems clearer than ever. Social distancing has been a massive global effort, and keeping the air clean and clear will be equally demanding. Fortunately, five years ago, the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE was launched, designed to create new technologies that not only reduce the emissions of energy production, but also turn these emissions into valuable products that can be used in our everyday lives. What once seemed like a fantasy, has already been turned into reality, with even more progress to come.
EXPANDING HUMAN CAPABILITY
AI is more than just Siri or Alexa. The IBM Watson XPRIZE is demonstrating how we can collaborate with AI technologies to tackle a variety of challenges that can be solved through complex data analysis that humans simply can’t do. Your phone’s AI still might need a few tries to set a timer, but the work of these teams is leading to breakthroughs in a range of issues, including disease prevention, food waste and even crime fighting (Hollywood got this one wrong).
ELIMINATING OUR PHYSICAL DISTANCES.
Today, you can email, text, call or video chat your mom on Mother’s Day -- unfortunately, many of us can’t visit in person right now. But what if you could, without either of you leaving your homes? The idea of high-sensory robotic avatars that allows us to transfer our human presence feels like complete science-fiction, but most XPRIZE projects do when they get started.
After the ANA Avatar XPRIZE ends in March 2022, Mother’s Day might never be the same.
